Period property renovation in Stockport 2023

Full property renovation works to include a complex basement conversion, loft conversion, a flat roof extension, internal fit out and external landscaping.

Project Brief

Working in a team alongside the client’s architect, interior designer and other contractors, our role was to project manage and deliver a detailed schedule of renovation works to bring the home up to modern standards while maintaining its period style.

The Build

Heavy rain proved to be a key challenge, meaning we had to re-order some of the works in order to keep the project on track. Our team busied themselves in different parts of the property whilst waiting for water levels in the basement to subside.

The basement works started with taking up the floor, removing walls, before extending and re-tanking the space to make it water tight and meet current regulations. A new concrete floor was laid, partition walls created and first fix utilities installed.

Our team then moved on to construct the flat roof extension which would become a light-filled garden room/orangery at the rear of the property.

During the re-roofing phase, rotten roof beams were discovered, which we had not anticipated at the outset. After consulting with the client, we gained consent to replace the damaged beams with new before continuing with re-roofing using materials sympathetic to the period.

The entire house was then insulated to save energy and improve its environmental credentials, and a new heating system installed. Windows in sustainable accoya wood, window boards, doors and architraves followed. We replaced the existing staircase with a bespoke design to match the age of the property.

An extensive property fit out included the kitchen, utility, boot room, bathrooms, bespoke doors and frames, wall panelling, a cinema room, media walls.

Midway through the renovation, the interior design firm went into administration. Fortunately, our team is experienced in this area and we were able to fine tune the designer’s ideas and complete the project in line with their plans. Interior décor work extended to the use of furniture, colour, materials, lighting, electrical sockets and switches, and installing Herringbone wood and LVT flooring.

External landscaping to construct a new driveway and front garden design added the finishing touches to this Stockport property renovation.

The Results

A full suite of renovation works with several variations and challenges resulted in a sensitive, yet complete transformation of this stunning residential property. Our client was impressed by the way we problem solved and adapted to the weather conditions. Our ability to carry out works in challenging circumstances, and our strengths in period property renovation and basement conversion were evident.
